When it comes to discovering the world and traveling, few names are as clouty as Rick Steves. The renowned travel expert, author, and host of the popular TV show “Rick Steves’ Europe” has spent almost his entire life exploring the world’s most interesting and fascinating places. Despite making his name by sharing Europe’s culture, his most loved country isn’t in Europe! His favorite country, he revealed, is none other than India. In a blog post, Steves reflected on his travels and gushed about why India is the place to be. According to Steves, India’s vibrant culture, diverse landscapes, and fascinating history make it a worthy destination.

Rick Steves is Obsessed with India’s Culture

“I am thankful for India,” Steves boldly wrote, adding, “ If I weren’t on a mission in Europe, India’s where I’d be. If you enjoy culture shock, India is pure decadence.” And the nation is filled with decadence, chaos, and diversity. From the bustling streets of Mumbai to the serene backwaters of Kerala, India pretty much has something for everyone.

From history junkies, adventure mavericks, and those who crave spiritual connection, describing India is an ineffable endeavor. The country is a tapestry of religions, languages, and traditions, each contributing to a rich and vibrant national identity. While Steves doesn’t go into explicit details about his time in India, it’s easy to see why he’s fascinated by the nation, which boasts over 1 billion residents.

Why You Should Visit India

In his blog post, Steves mentions how historically significant India is, which is a bold claim that’s also hard to deny. Consider the numerous empires that have dominated and ruled over India. Because of its significance and clout, the country is home to some of the world’s most iconic landmarks, from the majestic Taj Mahal to the ancient ruins of Hampi. These historical sites are not just relics of the past but are integral to understanding the evolution of civilization in South Asia.

You obviously know just how iconic and beloved the Taj Mahal is, which sees well over a million visitors each year. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Mughal relic is not just an architectural marvel but also a symbol of enduring love that was built by emperor Shah Jahan. Similarly, the ancient city of Hampi, with its stunning temples and ruins, offers a glimpse into the grandeur of the Vijayanagara Empire. These destinations are literally just the tip of the iceberg.

India is a Diverse and Eclectic Country

If you’re looking for variety, look no further than India. The country is home to millions of Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus, and Christians, and this is reflected in each facet of the nation. Of course, the diversity can also be seen in the nation’s cuisine. Whether it’s the spicy curries of the South or the rich, creamy dishes of the North, Indian food is a gastronomic adventure in itself.

“India wallops anyone’s self-assuredness. India rearranged my cultural furniture […] I was humbled in a way that made me a better person,” Steves writes. The travel maverick acknowledges the challenges that come with traveling there, but he thinks it’s well worth it. India’s vastness and complexity can be no doubt overwhelming for first-time visitors. With over a billion people, there’s bound to be some culture shock, both in terms of language and experience. But, according to Steves, it’s all worth it.
