What To Do If Your Hotel Room Smells

Checking into your hotel room only to be hit by a strong, unpleasant odor can put a damper on your entire trip. Whether the smell is musty, smoky, or just strange, it’s never something you should ignore. A bad smell not only affects your comfort but could also point to cleanliness or maintenance issues that the hotel needs to address.

The first thing to do is pinpoint where the odor is coming from. Is it the carpet, the bathroom, the air conditioner, or something else entirely? Sometimes it’s as simple as poor ventilation, while other times it may be from previous guests smoking in a nonsmoking room. Once you have an idea of the source, call the front desk immediately and explain the issue calmly. Most hotels will offer to move you to a different room or send housekeeping to investigate. Documenting the issue with a photo or video might also help if you need to escalate your complaint later.

Ask For a Room Change or Professional Cleaning

If the smell persists after housekeeping has attempted to fix it, don’t hesitate to ask for a new room—ideally on a different floor or far from the original location. You’re paying for a clean, comfortable space, and you have every right to request a room that meets reasonable standards. If the hotel is fully booked and a room change isn’t possible, ask for a discount or other compensation, such as free breakfast or late checkout.

It’s also worth checking that the air conditioning or heating unit has a clean filter. Dust and mold buildup in these systems are common culprits of bad odors. If you’re sensitive to smells or have allergies, carrying a travel-sized air freshener or odor absorber, like activated charcoal or baking soda, can be helpful. Keep in mind that some smells might also cling to hotel linens or pillows, so asking for replacements may improve the situation quickly.

For travelers who want to stay in control, one proactive option is to check hotel reviews beforehand and search for mentions of odors or cleanliness issues. Being aware of what other guests have experienced can help you avoid potential problems before you even arrive.
