The Biggest Tourist Traps to Avoid In Paris, France

Ah, Paris! One of the most popular destinations in the world, the City of Light sees well over a million tourists a year. Though it doesn’t have the busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic, Paris continues to top the list of most visited destinations in the world. Filled with romance, art, history, and some of the best wine in the world, Paris, France is a bucket list destination for many. Dream destinations come at a price, however, as not every experience in the French city is worth your time or money. From overpriced attractions to overcrowded streets, navigating the city’s various districts and attractions can be tricky. If you want to make the most of your time in Paris, steer clear of these devious tourist traps.

Don’t Bother Going to the Top of the Eiffel Tower

Ok, you’re obviously going to the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It’s a symbol of love, the power of human ingenuity, and one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world. However, paying extra for Eiffel Tower summit access can feel like a rip-off. With long lines that stretch for what feels like an entire day and sky-high prices (you’re looking at $40 USD just to go to the top floor), it’s often better to enjoy the view from the not-too-far Trocadéro Gardens. Not only do you get an unbeatable view of all of Paris, but you’ll also have space to breathe and snap some stunning Instagram photos without the crowd. Plus, the evening light glinting off the tower is nothing short of magical. Keep in mind that you don’t have to pay a penny to enter the tower’s grounds, so be wary of scammers trying to fool you with “cheap” tower tickets.

Skip the Shopping at Paris’ Champs-Élysées

You’ll probably end up pairing the Eiffel Tower with the Champs-Élysées, so keep this one in mind. Walking down the pricey Champs-Élysées sounds romantic, but the reality is that it’s nothing more than a tourist trap. You’ll find a gauntlet of overpriced chain stores and boutiques, as well as touristy shops that can sap your energy and your budget. Definitely walk down the bustling streets — it’s one of Paris’ most lively — but keep your wallet safe by just window shopping. Everything in this district is overpriced and you can probably get what you want from here in your hometown. If you do want to shop, head to Le Marais instead. This eclectic neighborhood is one of Paris’ best and it boasts unique boutiques, vintage shops, and cozy cafés that offer a true taste of local culture. And here’s a bonus: your wallet will thank you.

Ignore a River Cruise on the Seine

The biggest tourist trap in Paris, France is probably the one you already knew about: a Seine River cruise. Don’t get us wrong — the views are  lovely, but the experience is often sullied by large crowds, loud tourists, and overpriced tickets. Instead, consider a picnic by the river (a true Parisian activity) or take a casual stroll along its banks. You’ll actually be able to soak in the atmosphere, have photo ops on the city’s bridges, and maybe even stumble upon a hidden gem café for a delightful caffeine break to fuel your travel. And if you really want to do how the locals do, rent a bicycle to explore the Seine’s picturesque paths.
