How to Check for Bed Bugs in Your Hotel Room

Checking into a hotel room should feel relaxing, but there’s one thing travelers should always do before settling in: check for bed bugs. These tiny pests can show up even in clean, high-end hotels and are notorious for hitching a ride home in your luggage. A quick inspection can help you avoid the headache of bringing an infestation back with you.

The process only takes a few minutes, and knowing where and how to look can give you peace of mind during your stay.

Start With the Mattress and Headboard when checking for Bed Bugs

Begin your inspection by pulling back all the bedding. Look closely at the seams and corners of the mattress and box spring, where bed bugs like to hide. You may see tiny dark spots, which are bed bug droppings, or even small, rust-colored stains. Use your phone flashlight for a better view, especially if the lighting in the room is dim.

Next, check behind and around the headboard, especially if it is attached to the wall. Bed bugs often nest in cracks, behind furniture, or near the mattress. Even if you don’t see live bugs, spotting signs like shed skins or eggs means it’s time to alert the front desk and request a new room, preferably in a different part of the hotel.

Inspect Furniture and Luggage Areas

Bed bugs can hide in more than just beds. Take a moment to inspect upholstered chairs, the edges of nightstands, and the folds of curtains if they are near the sleeping area. Avoid placing your luggage directly on the bed or carpet. Instead, use the luggage rack and keep it away from the wall to minimize the chance of bed bugs crawling in.

Many seasoned travelers go one step further by storing their suitcase in the bathroom, where tile surfaces are less hospitable to bugs. It might seem excessive, but it’s a helpful precaution, especially in places with high traveler turnover.

If you suspect bed bugs, document what you see with a photo and report it to hotel management immediately. Most hotels will relocate you or take further action quickly to protect their reputation and other guests.

Being proactive about checking for bed bugs is a small effort that can save you from a big problem later. A few minutes of inspection can help ensure your trip stays comfortable and pest-free.
