James Gunn’s Superman was filmed in a diverse set of locations that bring both gritty urban energy and breathtaking natural landscapes to life. Instead of relying solely on soundstages, the production team chose real‑world settings that deepen the film’s emotional resonance and visual scope. From the Arctic wilderness to the Midwest city streets, Superman was brought to life across several countries and states.
Filming began in early 2024 and wrapped in late July of that year, with the movie hitting theaters in July 2025. Director James Gunn and his crew prioritized authentic environments that could serve as believable stand‑ins for Superman’s world, including Smallville, Metropolis, and the Fortress of Solitude. Here’s a look at the major real‑world sites that served as the backdrop for Superman.
Arctic Scenes Were Filmed in Norway
A standout filming location for Superman was the Adventdalen valley in Svalbard, Norway. This remote Arctic region, with its dramatic icy terrain and stark beauty, provided the perfect backdrop for scenes set near Superman’s Fortress of Solitude. Gunn specifically chose this area for its resemblance to Antarctica’s stark, otherworldly landscape, giving the film a sense of place that few soundstages could replicate.
The harsh conditions and natural beauty of Svalbard helped ground the story’s more mystical and isolated moments, contrasting with the urban locations used elsewhere in the film. Using this rugged location on camera added a cinematic realism to classic DC Comics locations like the Fortress of Solitude.
Ohio Doubled as Metropolis
A surprising and central set of filming locations for Superman was in Ohio, particularly in Cleveland and Cincinnati. Downtown Cleveland, with its striking architecture and historic buildings, was transformed into the bustling city of Metropolis. Landmarks such as the Leader Building, which stood in for the Daily Planet headquarters, and the Cleveland Arcade, which appeared in key scenes, became memorable visual anchors in the film.
Other Cleveland sites used include Public Square, the Detroit‑Superior Bridge, Progressive Field, and structures like Key Tower and PNC Plaza, which helped shape the skyline audiences see onscreen. Cincinnati also played a significant role; its iconic Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal served as the Hall of Justice, adding a classic look inspired by comic‑book depictions of the superhero team’s headquarters. The city’s Lytle Tunnel was used for action sequences involving intense vehicle and character movement.
Georgia Provided Supporting Scenes and Production Base
Much of the interior filming and controlled production work took place in Georgia. Superman was shot at Trilith Studios in the Atlanta area, where soundstage work, set construction, and other controlled environment scenes were filmed. Gunn’s crew also filmed in Macon and LaGrange, Georgia, which contributed to moments representing Smallville or rural settings in the story.
These locations supported production logistics and provided the controlled environments filmmakers needed to capture detailed scenes without the unpredictability of outdoor shoots.
