What’s the Safest Seat On A Plane?

Most travelers, especially those who fly frequently, pick their plane seats based on legroom, bathroom proximity, or whether they can snag a window view. But if you’re someone  who thinks about worst case scenarios, you’ve probably wondered which seat gives you the best odds if something goes horribly wrong. Surprisingly, the safest seats aren’t actually in first class.

The Back Of The Plane Could Be The Safest

The middle seat in the rear of the aircraft has the lowest fatality rate at just 28%, according to a TIME analysis of 35 years of FAA crash data. The back third of the plane overall has a 32% fatality rate, compared to 39% in the middle and 38% up front. Another study by the National Transportation Safety Board found that passengers in the rear had a 69% survival rate, while those in first and business class only had a 49% chance.

Why the stark difference? Most crashes happen nose first, meaning the front takes the initial impact while the rear has a slightly better chance of staying intact. What’s most interesting is that the middle seat, which no one really wants (unless you’re a true sicko), offers the most protection because you’re cushioned by passengers on both sides.

Every Plane Crash Is Different

Of course, not all crashes are alike, and the FAA, as well as aviation experts, can’t make predictions about how each and every plane crash will go. The truth is that there’s no guaranteed safest seat because every accident is unique. If the tail takes the hit, front passengers might fare better. If the plane breaks apart differently, all bets are off, and perhaps no one will survive. While statistics shows the back of the plane is the safest, chances of a plane crash are so low, you’re better off just picking the seat that’ll give you maximum enjoyment before you arrive at your destination.

If you still want to plan ahead… Sit near an emergency exit if you can, count the rows to the nearest exit when you board, and actually pay attention to the safety briefing instead of doom scrolling on Instagram or learning about which tourist traps you should avoid in Barcelona.
