You’ve finally bought the ring you’ve been eyeing for months. And even though it’s a lab-grown diamond, you know your partner will love it (fingers crossed). The ring, it’s sitting in your dresser drawer, and you’ve been planning the perfect proposal for so long. There’s just one problem: you need to get it from Point A to Point B without your partner finding out.
Maybe you’re flying to a Greek island during the summer, or perhaps you’re driving to the best winter destination in Canada. Wherever you’re going, you’re panicking about airport security, lost luggage, and accidentally leaving a ring box in plain sight. Instead of thinking about the negatives that could happen, focus on the positive. Here’s how to travel with an engagement ring without ruining the surprise or losing your mind.
Pack Your Engagement Ring In Your Carry On
Be smart and always, always, always pack your engagement ring in your carry on bag. Checked bags get lost, delayed, stolen, and thrown around by baggage handlers who definitely aren’t thinking about your proposal plans. This isn’t my advice, this is literally what the TSA says about jewelry, like engagement rings: “If you are travelling with valuable items such as jewelry, please keep those items with you at all times (do not put them in checked baggage).”
Keep the ring in its original box for protection, but don’t wrap it. If your bag gets searched, security will make you unwrap it, creating more attention. Hide the ring box inside a sock, stuff it into a shoe, or bury it in a toiletry bag. Just make it look boring and generic, so your partner has no idea what’s happening. Also, just know that the ring won’t set off metal detectors, and it’ll pass through X-ray scanners without drama as long as you follow TSA rules. If you wanna be real cutesy and avoid any drama, attach a note to the ring box saying “Engagement ring, please be discreet” in case your bag gets searched
International Travel and Keeping It Safe
If you’re proposing abroad, bring documentation just in case customs asks questions. Just bring a receipt or have a webpage with the ring on your phone handy. Once the proposal is done, and the ring is actually on the finger it needs to be on, chances are security won’t be asking questions.
Once you land, use a hotel safe. Yes, it’s perfectly fine to leave valuables in a hotel safe, so don’t fret. Don’t leave the ring sitting in your room unattended. If you’re staying at an Airbnb or a relative’s house, keep it on you or buy a small portable safe. Oh, and good luck! You’re totally gonna get that “Yes!” you’ve been waiting for.
