Those heading to Istanbul, Turkey are in for the treat of a lifetime. One of the most beautiful, culturally significant, and historically rich places on Earth, you’ll need more than a week or two to truly understand why this city is a favorite for millions. Turkey is one of the most visited countries in the entire world for both business and pleasure, with Istanbul standing out as one of the country’s busiest airports.

While it’s easy to figure out what to do in the Turkish city, it’s decidedly difficult to figure out where to stay in Istanbul – especially if it’s your first time. Luckily, there are two specific areas that stand out for newcomers hoping to get the most out of this world-class transcontinental metropolis.

Sultanahmet, Fatih Is Perfect For History Lovers

Sultanahmet, which is located in Istanbul’s beloved Fatih district, is in the heart of the Old City. If you’re heading to Turkey for its rich historical significance, you’d be hard-pressed to find a better place to stay. If you decide to stay here, you’ll be super close to the iconic Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, which stand mere minutes apart. If you’re looking for an authentic Turkish vibe, then you’ll be pleased to know that the labyrinthine Grand Bazaar is just a short walk away. At the Grand Bazaar, it’s customary to haggle! But don’t get carried away and insult shopkeepers with lowball prices.

This specific area in Istanbul brims with restored Ottoman mansions that have been repurposed. These old, iconic homes now boast boutique accommodations, with many featuring rooftop terraces with views of the Bosphorus. Now, this area is heavily tourist-focused, but don’t let that stop you from having a good time.  While tourist-oriented, Sultanahmet’s proximity to major sites means less time navigating public transport and more time exploring. You should seriously consider staying in this area if you only have 2-4 days in Istanbul. You’ll save plenty of time and be in the heart of all the hustle and bustle.

Istanbul’s Nightlife Dominates In Beyoğlu

For those seeking a more contemporary Istanbul experience, Beyoğlu delivers with its artistic spirit and vibrant nightlife. Istanbul is a city of opposites and extremes, which means one district or area is different from another. Over the last three decades, Istanbul has become extremely modern, and Beyoğlu is the perfect manifestation of that modernity.

Centered around İstiklal Avenue, this district showcases the city’s modern face while maintaining its historic charm (which is abundant through its old-school architecture). This area truly shows how both old and new Istanbul are able to coexist in a unique, but palatable way.  The area’s art nouveau architecture houses a mix of upscale and mid-range lodging options near the iconic Galata Tower. This is where the city’s nightlife can be found, especially if you’re young. Are you a solo traveler? You’ll be hard-pressed to find a better place to stay, as there are tons of hostels, and plenty of intimate cafes, wine bars, and galleries where you can find locals to party with.

Where Else To Stay In Istanbul, Turkey

Other areas worth considering include Karaköy, with its hip waterfront scene and emerging cultural status. It’s becoming extremely popular, which means that’ll be on the pricier end, but definitely worth it if you want to wake up to stunning views. You can also consider Beşiktaş, which is known for its authentic food markets and proximity to Dolmabahçe Palace.

For a truly unique experience, there’s always Kadıköy, which is located on the Asian side. Here, visitors can experience a less touristy atmosphere while maintaining easy ferry access to major attractions. We’d recommend staying here if you’re in Istanbul for a couple of weeks as it offers a more homely vibe.
