Unlike most Marvel productions that default to Atlanta (which has one of the busiest airports in the entire world), “Daredevil: Born” Again pretty much filmed entirely in New York City, staying true to Matt Murdock’s Hell’s Kitchen roots. This was a decision that was made early on and it seems like it paid dividends, as the latest “Daredevil” show is considered by many to be one of Marvel’s best.
In an interview with Men’s Health, showrunner Dario Scardapane said that: “Nobody ever suggested Toronto. Nobody ever suggested Atlanta. It was always going to be in New York. I don’t think you could shoot Daredevil correctly in a stand-in city.”
Real New York Locations Brought Marvel’s Daredevil To Life
Production filmed across multiple New York boroughs 2024. Harlem served as a key filming location, capturing the gritty urban energy the show needs. For those who don’t know, Daredevil is firmly involved in the day-to-day happenings of Harlem, emerging as one of the area’s most prominent heroes. Of course, the show also takes place outside of Harlem, with the Disney series shooting extensively in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This is where they filmed scenes at The Turkey’s Nest bar, which becomes Josie’s Bar in the series, a regular hangout for Matt, Karen, and Foggy.
Government buildings played a major role since Wilson Fisk is running for mayor. The production filmed outside Yonkers City Hall and used the David N. Dinkins Municipal Building in Manhattan, which houses actual New York City offices and sits near multiple courthouses, perfect for Matt’s legal scenes.
Studio Work Handled The Complex Stuff
For interior scenes and elaborate fight choreography, the production used Silvercup Studios East in Queens. This is where they built Wilson Fisk’s mayoral office and recreated Gracie Mansion interiors on soundstages.
In most cases, interior shooting happened at the studio, where it’s easier to accommodate the larger crew. Plus, designers have more flexibility building from the ground-up as opposed to accommodating the look of an existing location. Filming on sound stages and on studio lots is not a novel decision, as several blockbusters, like James Cameron’s “Avatar” movies were filmed on studio lots.
