How To Get Upgraded To First Class

Let’s be honest: economy seats on a flight can be miserable, especially if the plane is packed. You get very little legroom, below-average food, and don’t have much personal space. Plus, you have to get to the airport super early and don’t have access to any of those premium lounges. Sometimes, however, the stars can align in your favor and you end up in first class. There’s champagne to sip on, world-class dining, and your own pod to sleep in. Unfortunately, first-class tickets can be extremely expensive, often two or three times more expensive than economy tickets. While it might be worth dishing out the extra cash for someone, it might just not be worth it for others. However, there are genuine opportunities to get upgraded to first class without much effort.

Use Airline Loyalty To Your Advantage

When it comes to getting complimentary first-class upgrades, loyalty is your strongest weapon. Airlines prioritize frequent flyers through their mileage programs. If you’re consistently flying with one carrier, status matters immensely. Higher-tier members frequently receive upgrade preferences, often for free. If there’s an empty spot in the first-class cabin, staff will try their best to ensure their most loyal customers get treated well.

Don’t have high-tier status? Entry-level status can bump you ahead in the upgrade queue if there are enough spots available. You’re more likely to get a first-class upgrade on an entry-level status on flights that aren’t fully booked.

Get A Quality Credit Card

If you want to travel like a rockstar, you’ve got to spend like one. Or at least have a rockstar card. Credit cards affiliated with airlines offer another strategic pathway to getting first-class or premium economy upgrades. A number of travel credit cards provide complimentary upgrades or accelerated status qualification. These credit cards can have massive annual fees, but they’ll get you where you need to go in style. The American Express Delta SkyMiles Reserve Card, for example, offers complimentary upgrades (on a priority basis) and annual companion certificates. Plus, you get access to these sweet lounges you’ve always dreamt about.

Other Ways To Get First Class Upgrades

As previously mentioned, timing and flexibility are crucial. Book flights during off-peak seasons or midweek when first-class cabins are less full. Early morning and late-night flights often have more upgrade availability. If you’re willing to adjust your travel plans, you’ll increase your odds!

Now, even if you’re flexible, how do you get these first-class upgrades? You should check in strategically. Almost all airlines release last-minute upgrades 24-48 hours before departure. While each airline is different, you can often bid on first-class upgrades, or outright secure it by paying a reasonable fare. Set flight alerts, monitor your reservation, and be prepared to act quickly as these upgrades can go extremely quickly. Sometimes you can even bid on these upgrades with any airline points you have, making the deal even sweeter.

Of course, you can always just ask. Most folks don’t actually have the courage to ask staff for upgrades, which means you have a decent shot of securing one, especially if you know that cabins in first class are empty. You don’t need to wear a suit and tie but ask professionally in a respectable manner. Kindness and curiosity can go a long way. And even if you don’t get an upgrade, you’ll have left a solid impression on staff who can make your flight more enjoyable.
