The United States was built on fun and having a good time, which is why it’s home to some of the most thrilling and enchanting theme parks in the world. If you’re looking for insane roller coasters, crazy eats, and immersive experiences, America has you covered. Every theme park junkie is different, which is why it’s important to highlight the diverse array of theme parks that America has to offer while keeping individuals’ needs in mind.

Sometimes, the best theme park for a group of rowdy adults is different from a property that caters to families and their kids. With our best theme parks in the United States list, you’ll find every type of property, from familiar favorites to downright quirky gems.

Walt Disney World Resort (Orlando, Florida)

How can we have a list of the best theme parks in the United States without shouting out Walt Disney World? Seriously, Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida is a magical destination that spans over 25,000 acres, which means you’ll have no shortage of fun. In terms of worldwide theme park attendance, Walt Disney World Resort’s Magic Kingdom stands out as the most-visited, per AECOM’s Theme Park Index.

The 10 Best Greek Islands To Visit During The Summer

September 22, 2024

If you’re a fan of Disney, this is pretty much your mecca. One of our favorite pit stops is the iconic Cinderella Castle, which is the perfect place for photo ops. If you’ve got kids, they’ll love interacting with Mickey and the rest of the gang. And if you’re a sci-fi nut, you’re probably already excited to visit  Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. With character meet-and-greets, immersive dining, and spectacular fireworks, it’s a place where dreams come true, especially for younger theme park enthusiasts. The Florida resort is an absolute gem, but know that the best Disney theme park isn’t even in America!

Universal Studios Hollywood (Universal City, California)

No best theme parks list is complete without Universal Studios Hollywood. A gem of a park, Universal Studios has attractions for all ages. It could be argued that it has even more thrilling rides than Disney’s properties. What makes Universal Studios Hollywood unique is how it combines a working film studio with a theme park, offering visitors a behind-the-scenes look at movie-making. While that idea has definitely been done before, Universal continues to be a trailblazer in that specific aspect. Plus, it has some of the coolest attractions in the world. If you’re a Harry Potter nut, then you’re obviously going to be spending a day or three at the Wizard World of Harry Potter. Be sure to check out some of the daring rides too, like the Jurassic Park ride.

Six Flags Magic Mountain (Valencia, California)

Now, we’re diving deep into theme parks that prioritize thrills and chills! If you’re looking to raise your heart rate, look no further than Six Flags Magic Mountain, which is a paradise filled with roller coasters and adrenaline-pumping rides. Home to over a dozen coasters, including the record-breaking Twisted Colossus and X2, the park is known for its exhilarating experiences that you just can’t get anywhere else. Of course, if you’re looking for more low-key thrills during your trip, don’t fret. Guests can also enjoy family-friendly attractions and live entertainment throughout the season. Plus, if you visit in the fall, you’ll be able to check out Magic Mountain’s spooky Fright Fest, which is a must for horror fans.

Cedar Point (Sandusky, Ohio)

Cedar Point is another Six Flags property and was once considered their flagship location. While that’s no longer the case, this Ohio-based theme park is still a safe haven for coaster junkies around the world and sees millions of visitors each year. In fact, it’s frequently dubbed the “Roller Coaster Capital of the World” (despite having fewer coasters than Magic Mountain). With 17 coasters, including the record-breaking and beloved Steel Vengeance, it’s a must-visit for thrill enthusiasts — especially if they like their coasters comically fast! The park also features a beautiful waterfront, family rides, and an assortment of dining options. Beyond its thrills, Cedar Point is a historical gem, standing out as one of the oldest theme parks in the United States, making it a must-visit for enthusiasts.

Busch Gardens Williamsburg (Williamsburg, Virginia)

When it comes to unique experiences, Busch Gardens Williamsburg tops the list. Sure, it’s got coasters and the thrill rides that you’d expect, but it also seamlessly blends these theme park novelties with European-themed landscapes. Where else can you get European vibes with classic American theme park thrills?

This Virginian gem is home to roller coasters like the record-breaking Verbolten, which takes cues from the German autobahn and the family-friendly Grover’s Alpine Express. Beyond rides, visitors can enjoy animal encounters (they’ve got an impressive collection) and live shows that highlight the rich cultures represented in the park’s various sections. In many ways, a trip to Busch Gardens is a trip across the ocean, providing visitors with views and experiences that are genuinely out-of-this-world.

Disneyland Resort (Anaheim, California)

No theme park list is complete without a nod to the American OG. No, Disneyland in California isn’t the oldest theme park in America, but it did set the standard. As the original Disney theme park, Disneyland Resort remains a classic, if not a bucket list destination for families. When you go to Disneyland in California, you’re emphasizing history and novelty over thrills — and there’s nothing wrong with that. Visitors can enjoy iconic attractions like Space Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean, and the Haunted Mansion. You’ll also get a chance to visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge if you can’t make it out to Orlando. Unfortunately, Disneyland Anaheim doesn’t have Pandora — the Avatar-themed experience, which is an Orlando exclusive.

SeaWorld Orlando (Orlando, Florida)

Theme parks don’t just mean soaring through the skies. Sometimes, visitors want to see what’s below them, deep down in the water. If you’re looking for something unique when you’re in Orlando, then SeaWorld is an obvious choice. More low-key than other offerings, SeaWorld offers a unique blend of water and marine-based experiences, as well as exhilarating rides that’ll please junkies. For example, attractions like Mako, which is one of the tallest and fastest roller coasters in Orlando, and the immersive, water-based Infinity Falls provide thrills that should keep most satisfied. Above all, the park highlights the beauty of marine animals and conservation efforts. If you’re looking to learn a thing or two about the majestic creatures who call our oceans home, then SeaWorld in Orlando is calling you.

Dollywood (Pigeon Forge, Tennessee)

Are you a music buff? Then you’re going to want to book a flight to Tennessee to visit the cultural gem that is Dollywood. As the name suggests, Dollywood is co-owned by country music legend Dolly Parton. In a unique twist, this theme park combines thrilling and immersive rides with a Southern charm that’s as infectious as it is unique. Nestled in the Smoky Mountains, the park features plenty of rides for all ages, including the world-class Lightning Rod roller coaster, which is a pure tribute to Americana. The park also showcases live music, crafts, and delicious Southern cuisine that’s finger-licking. In short, it’s the quintessential family destination and a rite of passage for those who want to say they’ve been to the best theme parks in America.

Legoland California (Carlsbad, California)

Adults and kids love building LEGOs, right? Then why not continue to share that love at Legoland California? An extremely family-friendly park designed mostly for children, the property emphasizes childlike wonder and the importance of creativity. The park features tons of rides, shows, and attractions that highlight just how awesome (and influential) the LEGO brand is. Some favorites include Miniland USA, where iconic American landmarks are recreated with Lego bricks, and interactive rides that encourage creativity and imagination. If you’ve got young kids and find yourself in California, then Legoland is a must-visit.

Hersheypark (Hershey, Pennsylvania)

To round out our list, we’ve got a regional favorite that’s extremely underrated. Hersheypark combines amusement park thrills with chocolate-themed fun. Yes, this is a theme park owned by Hershey, the chocolate company. Home to a slew of rides and attractions, including the thrilling Candymonium coaster, the park offers something for everyone. More importantly, it has tons of chocolate. And if chocolate isn’t your thing, visitors can explore ZooAmerica, a walk-through zoo featuring North American animals. Hersheypark is an absolute gem and has even won the Applause Award, one of the most prestigious awards a theme park can receive.
